Asking The Right Kinds of Questions!

What questions do you ask when networking? I love to connect with people on LinkedIn and I am more than willing to engage in conversation in the spirit of networking and relationship building.  As a coach and educator, may I offer some insight into asking the right kinds of questions?

First, let me tell you a quick story.  Last week, an individual who I just connected with sent me a DM asking some big questions! The request was for key insights into Career Transition and Growth Strategies, Personal Branding, Networking, Coaching AND Professional Development (ie broad sweeping questions). I found this request difficult for the following reasons:

  1. The questions were too big. The questions that were posed needed a thoughtful customized response that needed to be carefully crafted and customized to the individual circumstances.
  2. It wasn’t the right medium. Sliding into my DM’s and hoping for thoughtful responses is a big ask of a new contact.
  3. Free advice! I am more than happy to offer a nugget of free advice, but a multitude of stacked advice seeking questions felt like an imposition.
  4. The right person. Given the mismatch between their industry and mine, I was not sure I was the right person for them to be talking with.

I know the person was well intentioned! So, I’d like to offer a better way.  When networking, consider the kinds of questions that can open the doors to future relationship.  I created the “4 Quadrant Method of Informational Interviews” framework for this very reason!

The Person — Get curious about their educational background, their career story and the things they learned along the way.

The Company — Gather available information on the company so that you can ask deeper questions about the company. Consider asking about the company culture, future goals or strategic plans.

The Industry — This is the perfect time to gather current labour market information, ask questions about trends or needs. I encourage everyone to ask about  Artificial Intelligence in relation to the industry and organization.

Next Steps — I like asking “who else should I be talking with?” and “do you have any advice for me?”. These two questions support relationship building.

Using the right kinds of questions will help you reach your networking goals.
